Hygiene INSTRUCTIONS AFTER BRACES IN Allen

After you get your braces on, it is important to brush your teeth after every meal or snack. Bring a toothbrush to school or work if needed. Plaque accumulates more easily on the brackets and must be cleaned off to avoid causing irreversible white or brown spots on the teeth from forming. It is also important to use a floss threader between your teeth daily to clear any plaque that has collected between the teeth. Drinking or rinsing with water regularly will also help keep your braces clean.

We recommend teeth cleaning every 3 months to ensure that the gums stay healthy and no spots are forming. It is a good time to evaluate home brushing and flossing efforts and to encourage and teach good habits.

WHAT TO EAT AFTER BRACES

When it comes to braces, it is more about what not to eat, than what to eat. When you are wearing braces, you do not want to eat any sticky foods or hard foods that may pull or break off brackets. It is also better to stay away from soft drinks that are acidic and often full of sugar.

  • Candy Bars
  • Gum
  • Pop Corn
  • Hard Candy
  • Taffy
  • Caramel
  • Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite 7up

SENSITIVE TEETH AFTER BRACES

When the teeth are moving they can become sore. It is normal to feel this soreness and even cold sensitivity after you get your braces on. You can take over the counter pain medication like Advil or Tylenol for this pain. Also, if the brackets or wires are hurting your lips and cheeks, you can apply some dental wax to those areas to help relieve this.

OTHER INSTRUCTIONS TO SPEED TREATMENT

It is important to the success of your treatment to follow all other instructions.

  • make timely appointments
  • wear rubber bands as directed
  • if a bracket or wire comes loose let us know immediately

Follow these instructions and you will be on your way to a straight smile fast!
