REASONS FOR TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

When it comes to oral health, maintaining your teeth is key. Unfortunately, there are times when teeth might need to be extracted for a variety of reasons, including dental decay or infection, trauma or impacted teeth.

EXTRACTING TEETH BECAUSE OF TRAUMA

If your tooth is painful, it may be infected. Infection can be dangerous because it can spread in your body to vital organs and if not treated can become life-threatening. If you are beginning to swell or have not been feeling well in combination with having a toothache, you need to contact the dentist immediately for treatment.

EXTRACTING TEETH BECAUSE OF IMPACTION

If your tooth has experienced trauma, it may need to be extracted. Depending on the severity of the injury and the extent of the damage to the tooth and its supportive structures, the tooth may have to be removed. If your tooth has been traumatized, it is important to see the dentist to determine the correct course of action early to prevent extraction when possible.
Wisdom teeth often cannot erupt into the mouth and should be extracted to prevent infection, tooth decay and gum disease related to partially erupted impacted wisdom teeth.

AFTER YOUR EXTRACTION

After a tooth is extracted the area of the extracted tooth is numb. It is important to refrain from eating anything you have to chew until the numbness wears off to prevent injury.
Before the numbness wears off it is wise to take an anti inflammatory medication to ease any pain that may set in. It is also important to use ice to prevent swelling. Using ice for the first 3 days will help reduce swelling and pain. It is also important to sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling and pain. To prevent dry socket, do not smoke, swish forcefully, drinks through a straw or drink carbonated beverages. It is important to take any medications given to you by the dentist.
You may experience pain that increases in intensity over the first 3 days. After the third day, the pain normally decreases steadily until it is gone completely. It is important to refrain from eating on the side that the tooth was extracted from for this first week. Then eat soft foods until the socket heals over, which can take 2 weeks.

DENTAL EXTRACTION FAQ

A dental extraction is a procedure in which a tooth is removed by a dentist or oral surgeon. Extractions can be done for a variety of reasons, including decay, overcrowding, damage, infection, or orthodontic treatment. Anesthesia may be used to help reduce discomfort during and after the extraction.
The length of time an extraction takes depends on several factors. Generally, a simple extraction will take anywhere from 10-15 minutes while a surgical extraction may take up to an hour.
Tooth extractions typically take up to 7-10 days to heal. It is important to follow proper care instructions from your dentist to help encourage proper healing.
